Our trip to the Lion & Safari Park

A few days ago I took the family to the newly relocated Lion and Safari Park, now situated on the R512 (about 10km past Lanseria Airport, heading towards Harties). The first thing you see is the huge parking lot.

This is the big change from the old venue. You might recall the tragic accident a good few months back where a visitor didn't heed warnings to keep windows closed at all times and a lioness jumped in and mauled the woman to death. I would imagine, mainly due to that, you are no longer permitted to drive yourself around the Lion Park. All visitors now park their cars and walk through the welcome centre, where you can purchase tickets to go on a game drive that lasts about 1.5 hours (entrance to the venue itself is free).

Listen, if you're expecting a bush experience, you're not going to get it. This is really a "free range zoo", where you go in a large safari vehicle and get driven through various enclosures.

The vehicles leave every 30 minutes and they have a comfortable waiting area:

Don't try and compare a visit to the Lion Park to a safari experience, rather just think of it as a great family afternoon out. My girls loved getting up close with the lions and hyenas and even a very docile giraffe. The driver/rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly.

You are able to feed the giraffes. They also have cheetahs, but you have to be 16 years and older to go on that safari ride.  If you go late afternoon you can witness the feeding of the animals which is always spectacular to watch. Speaking of food, they also have two restaurants. One is an upmarket grill (we didn't eat there, but I hear the food is outstanding). The other is a more casual restaurant called Wetlands.

The food was fine, but be prepared for dismal waiter service. They definitely need to up their game. I had mates that went about a week before we did and their whole family just eventually stood up and walked out.

My verdict? The Lion & Safari Park is a great excursion for the whole family... just pack your own lunch.
