Eighties music and the seedy CD.

This might bring back memories for a few people...

Back in the late 90s there was no such thing as MP3s. In fact, even "burning" your own CD was unheard of. So I would carry over 200 CDs with me when deejaying for an hour at a club.

Being the Virgo that I am, back in 1997 I came up with the idea of going to a record company and bringing out my own CD containing the top party songs from the 80s. That way, with all the good songs on one compilation, I would't have to carry as much music around with me and my CD box would be lighter. We managed to get the licensing rights to some good classics that couldn't be found on other compilations, I got my girlfriend at the time to draw the album cover and we released the 80s PILGRIMAGE.  It sold just short of going gold (and I made no money from it), but it did become the definitive CD to use at any 80s party.

So I had a good chuckle this last Saturday when Barney Simon and Paul Rotherham from Jacaranda FM, myself and legendary club deejay Paul Almeida were invited to Emerald Casino at the Vaal River to host an 80s party and both Barney and Paul R pulled out their copies of my CD!

The irony was, being the gadget man that I am, I didn't have a copy of my own CD at the 80s party, and instead, deejayed off my iPad and a portable mixing console!

A big thanks to everyone in the Vaal Triangle who came along to the gig. It was great playing the classics again... and also witnessing Barney Simon to a gig again. He's the only guy I know that can still get the entire club to squat on the floor and then jump up and down to Nelly the Elephant!
